Restoring ‘The Poor Old Soldier’

Hello, and welcome to the Russianmilitary OT-65 Restoration Blog.

Military vehicle restoration is something of a speciality of ours and this is the another project we have undertaken and chosen to document via our website restoration blog.

This section will take the form of a variety of a photos, informative short films (and of course our own ramblings) all designed to document the journey and processes that the OT-65 and our highly skilled restoration technicians have been through.

No stone (or nut and bolt) will be left unturned during the restoration and the OT-65 will become a thing of beauty once again.

The accompanying photos give you a sense of the exterior condition of the unit when it first arrived at our workshops. That’s why we’ve chosen to refer to it as ‘restoring the poor old soldier.’
The vehicle was transported from the Slovak Republic at the turn of the year…

Our restoration technician has been hard at work preparing the interior of the vehicle for priming and painting. This has involved the use of sand blasting equipment, a needle gun and a sander. The accompanying video shows the work that has been done.
A good deal of 'masking up' has also been done inside the hull - some dash area, electrical connections and remaining radio equipment.

Brake Restoration...this example superbly demonstrates the importance of and the need for full inspection of each vehicle that enters our workshops. On closer examination of a hub assembly, we can see that a hub seal is damaged. Even though this OT-65 came to us direct from the Military, there are partial missing brake shoes. New shoes and linings will be ordered...

The whole braking system has been completely pulled apart. You will see on the film that the half-shafts have been removed. I did say that no stone would be left unturned!

Attention will now turn to the interior of the vehicle...

The OT-65 ‘FUG’ was built in Hungary. They were built as a light, multifunctional, armoured wheeled vehicle, primarily intended for reconnaissance activities and also as an artillery observation post.

The ‘FUG’ is built on a 4x4 truck chassis with the engine at the rear. The engine is a Hungarian CSEPEL 6-cylinder diesel.

These two photos give an idea of the interior condition of the OT-65 on it's arrival in the UK...
